Luckily, the highs have a ton of clarity without getting too sharp. The issues with the bass seem to have leaked into the mids as well, because I have a very hard time hearing distinct sounds in a mix from the middle frequencies as they tend to muddy together into an unpleasant mush. It also means that in video games, explosions and similar sounds are clear, but lack “punch.” The result is that music lacks depth and can often sound hollow. Even when giving these headphones all they can take using the company’s app to boost the EQ, they max out at what I would consider to be the middle ground of basically any other gaming headset I’ve used. Starting with the bass, it just is really not there. However, I think too much was sacrificed. NZXT says that it wanted to come into this price bracket with a different philosophy than competitors and offer a headset that prioritized crisp and clear audio instead of the far more commonplace lower frequencies, and to that end the company succeeded. While you can adjust the headphones using NZXT’s CAM app if you use them in tandem with the company’s Switch Mix headphone stand and DAC, they seem to be hamstrung by muddy mids and weak bass, which can really affect the overall experience no matter what you’re trying to listen to. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the listening experience. Considering the price difference between these two headphones, that’s a big thumbs up for NZXT.

I used the microphone side by side against the Arctis Nova Pro microphone, which I previously called podcast quality, and my friends listening on the other end of the line could not tell the difference – they could not even tell I changed the microphone. Let’s start with the good news: NZXT did a bang-on job with the microphone. The whole line is a great length and is cord-wrapped, so it feels like it will last a very long time.

I can appreciate using this method to keep the design of the headphones more simple, but I am not a particular fan of added weight to the headphone cable – I recognize this is a personal preference, but I don’t like it when the cable keeps pulling off my desk and into my lap, and any added weight along the cable line, especially closer to the headphones, will make this happen.Īll that said, the cable itself feels very high quality. The right earcup also will go out before the left cup if you slowly turn the dial down. The volume dial does let the headphones get very quiet, but the tolerance is a bit sloppy since there is still significant play in the dial after the headphones are completely silent. NZXT instead chose to migrate those to the cable where you will find a mute switch, volume dial, and lapel clip. The design of the headset itself is incredibly clean since there are no controls on the earcups themselves. The mic is directional, and it provides outstanding audio quality, which I’ll get into below. While we are on the subject, the microphone can be articulated freely and comes with a pre-installed sock to reduce plosives. The earcups adjust side to side as well as up and down, giving you plenty of play to fit them to your specific needs.īelow the right earcup is the connection for wired audio, while below the left earcup is the port for the included microphone, which can detach. The headband features a particularly thick amount of padding, and while it squeezes easily in my hand, it feels very comfortable resting gently on the top of my head.

That said, they don’t breathe super well so you might get a bit sweaty if you’re in a hot room during the summer.

They are made of the same leatherette material you’ll find on similar headphones in the same price bracket, and the amount of cushion they provide feels comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The earcups are what I would qualify as “fine” quality. To put that in perspective, the Apple AirPods Max weighs 385 grams and the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro weighs 298 grams (the wireless version weighs 337 grams). The headphone feels solidly built and features a mix of plastic and metal pieces that communicate a sense of high quality.Įven with the inclusion of metal, the headphones weigh just 274.5 grams. When it comes to the design and the build quality of the Relay Headset, NZXT nailed many of the important parts.
